Ms. Gina Cardillo graduated from Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts with a BA in Sociology and a concentration in Education. She later earned a Masters of Education and a Special Education Teaching Credential from Providence College and her Administrative Credential from California State University, Long Beach. Prior to joining the Hawthorne School District, Ms. Cardillo served as a member of City Year, an AmeriCorps program; she also taught preschool, high school, and was a substitute teacher for elementary and middle school. In 2007, Ms. Cardillo relocated from Rhode Island to California after accepting a teaching position with LAUSD. Ms. Cardillo began working for HSD in 2009 as a Special Education teacher at York Elementary School. Since then, she has served as the Dean of Students at Bud Carson Middle School, Project Facilitator of School Climate for the district, Assistant Principal of Eucalyptus Elementary School, and Special Education Preschool Administrator. Ms. Cardillo is excited to join the HMS team and looks forward to working with Hawk students, families and staff!

Mr. Carlos Howe is a South Bay local and sports enthusiast. He was first hired by the Hawthorne School District in the year 2000 as a playground supervisor. Mr. Howe has extensive experience working in the middle school & high school levels and relishes in all of his roles. He earned his BA in Criminal Justice Administration from the University of Phoenix and his Teaching Credential from Cal State Dominguez Hills. In his spare time, Mr. Howe enjoys coaching athletics and working out. He also loves traveling and spending quality time with his wife & daughter.

Counselor Ms. Janna Iamaleava has been in the Hawthorne School District since 1997.She began her career as a classroom teacher at Zela Davis Elementary.After 7 years in the classroom, she became a Special Projects teacher at Washington for 2 years.She has been a middle school counselor for the last 11 years with 7 of them at Prairie Vista MS and the last 4 years here at HMS.She earned her B.A. in Psychology from Cal State Long Beach in 1996, her M.A. in Education in 2000, as well as an M.S. Counseling in 2007.She enjoys reading, fitness, shopping and spending time with her family

Mr. Brett Elliott is a Los Angeles native who earned his B. A. in Psychology from the University of California Santa Cruz, and his M. A. and Ed. S in School Psychology From Loyola Marymount University. This is his fifth year in the Hawthorne School District, and is very excited to work with the students, families, and staff at HMS. In his spare time he enjoys playing sports and spending time with family & friends

Ms. Valdiviezo earned a B.A. in Liberal Studies from the California State University of Long Beach, a Teaching Credential through Cal State University, Long Beach, and an M.A. in Child and Adolescent Literacy and Reading Certificate from Loyola Marymount University, Los Angeles. Ms. Valdiviezo currently teaches Language Arts and Social Studies to seventh graders. She also teaches Introductory Spanish to seventh and eighth graders. Alongside teaching, Ms. Valdiviezo enjoys traveling to new parts of the world but cannot see herself leave the South bay beach area for too long; she has also found she developed a new hobby for cooking!

Mrs. Tania Amezcua was born and raised in Torrance and graduated from Cal State Dominguez Hills.She has worked in education for almost 20 years, as an instructional aide and teacher.As a new acquisition to our Hawk family, she supports our English Learners and our ELAC committee.Before coming to Hawthorne she worked at a local high school where she taught Language Arts and Intervention classes.In her spare time, she enjoys watching sporting events and spending time with her husband, family, and friends.

Mrs. Cardenas earned her BA in Liberal Studies with a concentration in Chicano Studies, along with a Multiple Subject Teaching Credential from Loyola Marymount University. She has been with the district for over ten years and is G.A.T.E. certified. She has taught at Jefferson Elementary, Ramona Elementary and HMS. This is her third year as Literacy Coach. In her spare time, she enjoys baking with her daughter Olivia or spending time in their backyard with their 2 dogs; Buche and Bosco.
